Who we Are

The Afar Intellectuals Association (AFIA) is a nationally registered professional association founded in 2020 in Samara, Afar Regional State, Ethiopia. We are a dedicated group of young scholars united by a shared passion for empowering underprivileged communities and driving inclusive, sustainable development across the region.

We serve as a vital bridge, connecting donor communities with impoverished groups to tackle critical developmental challenges, including illiteracy, malnutrition, environmental degradation, lack of peace, and unemployment.

AFIA promotes access to quality healthcare services for Afar communities by raising awareness on preventive health, supporting maternal and child health programs, and collaborating with partners to combat malnutrition and communicable diseases. Our work emphasizes community-based solutions that ensure healthier and more resilient societies.

Project 2: Mapping Peace,Bridging the Divide:Indetifying and Strengthening Peace building Mechanisms in the Afar-Tigray Borderlands

Despite the consensus on the need to restore peace between borderline communities of Afar and Tigray regions, there seems to exist a knowledge gap on what kinds of peacebuilding interventions to implement and by whom.

Setting the Path for Sustainable Peace between Afar and Somali/Issa Communities

This project focused on bringing Afar and Issa/Somali intellectuals, leaders, and community members together to discuss sustainable peace. Activities included regional workshops, elite dialogue sessions, faith leaders’ consultations, and the creation of the Afar-Somali Peace Forum (AFSOM).
